Brickwork & Plaster Inspection: What Homeowners Should Check During Construction

Red clay brickwork (ईंट जुड़ाई) forms the load-bearing framework and partition walls of your residential home. Proper mortar mixing, thorough brick wetting, and plumb line alignment determine your wall strength and longevity.

1. Soaking Red Clay Bricks Before Laying

First-class red bricks must be soaked in water tanks for at least 1 to 2 hours before being laid on walls. Dry bricks absorb moisture out of wet cement-sand mortar, causing brittle mortar joints and weak bond strength.

2. Checking Plumb Lines (साहुल) & Mortar Joints

Master masons must verify vertical plumb lines (साहुल) and horizontal alignment (सूत) every three brick courses. Standard mortar ratios should be strictly maintained:

  • Outer Load-Bearing Walls (9-inch): Use 1 part cement to 6 parts sand (1:6 mix).
  • Internal Partition Walls (4.5-inch): Use 1 part cement to 4 parts sand (1:4 mix) with wire mesh every 4th layer.
  • Joint Thickness: Keep horizontal and vertical mortar joints uniform between 10mm and 12mm.

3. Concrete Hacking & Plaster Mortar Ratios

Smooth concrete surfaces of RCC columns and beams must be hacked (tacked with a cold chisel) at 25-30 indentations per square foot before plastering. For additional finishing tips, see our guide on Plastering & Curing Tips in Bihar and explore our Plastering Contracting Services.

Plaster Thickness Standards

Internal Walls: 12mm single coat (1:5 mix) | External Walls: 15mm double-coat (1:4 mix) with waterproof additive | Ceiling: 6mm neat coat (1:3 mix)
